Cyber Monday Sets Record

InformationWeek says that, for the first time ever, Cyber Monday broke $600 million in single day sales, setting a record. Oddly enough, earlier this week there was another report out saying Cyber Monday was a bust.

Internet shoppers handed $608 million to retailers on the Monday following the Thanksgiving weekend, a 26% increase over the same day last year, comScore Networks said Wednesday. It was the first time single-day online sales broke $600 million.

Bill Gates On Vista

USA Today had the opportunity to sit down with Bill Gates and ask him a handful of question. Topics range from Vista to Microsoft’s new media player, the Zune.

Hardware manufacturers will very quickly move to put Vista on new machines. So you turn over the installed base and it gets to very big numbers. Some of the installed base machines built in the last couple of years, those people will upgrade. We made it easier to do that. We migrate your settings.

Overdrive PC Core2.X-Fire

If you are looking for a factory overclocked PC, our Overdrive PC Core2.X-Fire evaluation at [H] Consumer will definitely be of interest.

Since we spent over $3,000 on this rig, and the previous PC we evaluated from the company blew us away, we have extremely high expectations for this system. Since Overdrive sells nothing but highly overclocked systems, we’ll be expecting tremendous performance with rock-solid stability. The company warranties its overclocks, so we’d expect the system to not give us any trouble.

CPU Wars Entering New Level

According to DigiTimes, motherboard makers are saying that the introduction of 45nm processors will escalate the CPU wars to a new level. Dual core processor speeds are expected to reach frequencies of 3GHz and higher in 2007.

Two days ago, Reuters cited Mark Bohr, director of process architecture and integration at Intel's technology and manufacturing group, as saying the US chip giant is "processing the first samples of the Penryn design, which will go back to the design team to determine if design is working as expected." Motherboard makers pointed out that Penryn is expected to raise the clock speeds of the Core 2 Duo product line above 3GHz.

YouTube On Your Cell Phone

You can do just about everything on your cell phone like the internet, music, video and games so why not get YouTube videos as well? I’m sure that’s exactly what Verizon was thinking when they made this deal...but is it worth paying money for it?

While its explosively popular Web site is free, YouTube’s phone-based version will require a $15-a-month subscription to a Verizon Wireless service called VCast. And instead of choosing what to watch from a vast library of clips, VCast users will be limited to an unspecified number of videos selected and approved by the companies.

Adware Targets Mac OS X

News.com has a bit of interesting information on a new adware program that silently installs itself on Mac OS X and opens Web browser windows. The program is a proof of concept and not out in the wild as of yet. Hopefully it will be addressed by Apple before it is exploited.

"We won't disclose the exact technique used here, it's a feature not a bug, but let's just say that installing a System Library shouldn't be allowed without prompting the user," according to the F-Secure blog on Thursday.
