Toyota Plans Own System for In-Car Software

Toyota is planning on creating its own operating system for its vehicles in an attempt to increase efficiency and further raise the bar in safety.

The reported move could also help significantly slash costs as part of a new initiative, dubbed the VI (value innovation) project, under which Toyota aims to lump more parts and modules together, for example by reducing the number of the 60-some electronic control units found in most cars.

iPhone Due June 11?

As always, you usually never know with an Apple product until it is on the shelf for purchase, but Cingular is stating that the iPhone will be released on June 11th.

Now Cingular is confirming that the release date will be June 11. A customer service manager at Cingular (we called 800-947-5096 and were transferred to sales) gave us that date late Thursday, but, alas, said he didn't have any additional information beyond that.

HP: Reward IT Managers for Green Thinking

The people at HP feel that IT managers should be allotted higher budgets when purchasing new hardware to allow for more energy efficient equipment. Then those savings can be applied to further projects down the road.

"Looking at the idea of power increasingly becoming a cost centre for businesses, then chief information officers need to make sure that they are being compensated for any investments they make in energy-efficient PCs or they will have no incentive to buy this kind of kit," he said.

Beware DST…Again

Any older devices that may not have been patched or were unable to be patched will probably attempt to set themselves ahead tomorrow.

And there may be more on Sunday night. It's likely that some consumers didn't upgrade their older devices. Instead, they changed their clocks manually. That's worked so far. But the devices are still programmed to change the time on the original daylight time start date. They will change the time by an hour unless that feature has been turned off.

Judge Rules Against DVD Consortium

A Superior Court judge ruled that Kaleidescape's media server does not violate the security technology used to protect DVD disks because the standard licensing contract and specifications for the technology are so poorly worded.

The decision marks a rare, though small victory for a Silicon Valley startup facing the interests of a group of large movie studios and consumer and computer companies. The ruling also could open the door for other systems makers who want to design personal video libraries that store DVD movies on hard drives.

Apple's iPhone Will Be Released June 11

According to News.com, Cingular is confirming that the release date of the iPhone is June 11th during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.

That date is no coincidence. It's the first day of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, scheduled to be held in San Francisco from June 11 through June 15. (Incidentally, the agenda includes a focus on Leopard, the next generation of OS X that's supposed to be released sometime in the second quarter of 2007.)

Circuit City Fires 3,400

Get this, Circuit City has fired 3,400 “higher-paid” employees so it can hire lower paid workers. What the!?!?! I know things are hard all over, CompUSA announced it was closing half its stores earlier this month too but I personally believe this will only hurt consumer confidence in Circuit City.

Circuit City said yesterday that it had fired 3,400 of its highest-paid sales staff and will replace them with lower-paid workers, a risky strategy to cut costs that goes beyond the layoffs, buyouts and hiring freezes commonly used by struggling companies.

In April of last year, we took a look at Retail Computer Purchasing Experiences and found that, out of the four major retailers we evaluated, Circuit City had the most competent and knowledgeable staff. Imagine how it will be after this.

Sony Introduces New HDD / DVD Recorders

Engadget has information on a new range of HDD / DVD recorders from Sony that look pretty spanky. I especially dig on the ability to upscale content.

Available in 160GB, 250GB, and 500GB varieties, each unit comes equipped with either a standard analog tuner or an added DVB-T tuner for your Freeview needs, with the whole lot of them boasting 1080p upscaling of content, as well as Sony's trademark BRAVIA Theater Sync for the usual Sony-centric benefits.

Microsoft Releases Zune Update

Microsoft has released the new Zune 1.3 patch for all 12 people that own one. The update fixes a music “skipping” issue and a few other minor things.

The software maker had originally hoped to have the update by midmonth, but the patch took slightly longer than it had hoped to develop and test. In addition to addressing the song-skipping issue, the Zune 1.3 software update aims to offer quicker syncing and improve a situation where the Zune's battery could drain more quickly after using the FM tuner.
